I've been scarce the past few weeks with my flash fiction post. Blame it on summer, family, and visitors. Now I'm back. Enjoy!

WHITE FEATHER

First came the sorrow, then the pain of loss, followed by the anger.

In the end, it was the depression that engulfed me.

Know that I’m surrounded by caring and loving people. But there are no words or actions to take away the emptiness within. They worried about me but they didn’t understand. He was the love of my life, father to my children, best friend, lover and soul mate.

Then one day, I saw one; soon they appeared everywhere. I picked up the soft, fluffy white feather. It would join the others in my little jewelled box. You see, he sent them, all of them—to let me know he was still around.

I looked out to sea, took in the sunlight dancing across the waves, the blueness of the sky, and heard the cry of the sea gulls.

For the first time in months, I smiled.

WRITERLY WEDNESDAY FICTION PICTURE PROMPT - THE FAMILY

THE FAMILY

I stared at the pictures, the younger twins, my brother and me (the older twins), and our mother. The pictures told our story in a way none of us wanted to.

It was all in the eyes. Look close and you’ll see ... the haunting, blank stares that hid our secrets and our pain.

But today was special. Today, our lives would start again.

“You ready?”

I turned towards my brother. He stood with his hands on the shoulders of the younger ones who were now ten years old.

Eight years is what our mother served for killing our abusive, alcoholic father. She’d paid the ultimate price to protect us from his rage. They released her for good behavior. My brother and I had raised our younger siblings, struggling through school and working two jobs, living for this day.

I smiled at him. “Let’s go bring Mom home.”

WRITERLY WEDNESDAY FLASH FICTION PICTURE PROMPT - A MOTHER'S LOVE

This week I'm going out on a limb with a controversial subject that may not be to the liking of some. It's a challenge to address something like this in 150 words. However, it is more about the unconditional love and support of a mother and the angst a mother can experience even with an adult child. Hope you like it.

A Mother's Love

I stared at the photo. She loved that park. I remember buying pretty dresses in the early years. She refused to wear them. Definitely a tomboy. I came to accept she wasn’t a girlie girl. But who knew?

The teen years aroused my suspicions. Was she a lesbian? She was popular with both boys and girls but never dated, studied hard, won a scholarship to university. I was proud. But this?

She told me a week ago and I’ve been crying for days. Initially, for me. But this is about her ... him. Transgendered. Hormones. Surgery.

I carried my child for nine months, nurtured her, raised her ... him as a single mom. Now the tears are for him and what he’ll face.

I heard the door open. I stood. “Mom?” He entered the room and into my outstretched arms.

“You’re still mine,” I said.

Together, we cried.

WRITERLY WEDNESDAY PICTURE PROMPT - BUNNY

I can't believe it's Writerly Wednesday again. The week flew by so fast. Hope you all had a happy and safe Easter weekend, shared with family and friends and lots of good food.

This weeks picture was difficult for me, but once an idea popped into my head, the story wrote itself. Hope you enjoy it.

Bunny

            Our two-year-old Chrissy found the rabbit hidden under her bed that Sunday morning. She’d held it up and giggled excitedly. “Bunny, Mommy.” 

            Has a year really passed since last Easter?

            I held the rabbit tight; flooded with memories rendering my heart heavy. We’d lost her two days later to a drunk driver who hit our car. Someone found the rabbit on the road and gave it to the police. I buried my face in Bunny’s fur and cried.

            Bunny went into the box with Chrissy’s things for my husband to store in the attic.

             My eyes scanned the redecorated room and the bassinet in the corner. My hands moved to my blossoming abdomen. This baby could never replace Chrissy but a new life could help us cope with the loss of another.

            I smiled. One day, I’ll give her Bunny and tell her of the sister she’ll never know.

Good morning. I must say these words have special meaning for me today. I've been down for the past few days with a flu bug and today is the first day I feel relatively human.

Keep on Keeping on Writing

ANTICIPATION

Half-way through February and I'm filled with great anticipation. For WHAT you ask? Is there a plural for WHAT?

I have great expectations for this year in so many aspects of my life and the lives of those around me.

First on the list is the selling of our home. With a deal on the table, we are just waiting for the buyers to sell their home. I guess this one is a hurry up and wait scenario, as the only control we have over this is to develop and exercise our skill of patience. So I keep myself busy by cleaning out and discarding unneeded and unnecessary items; clothing, books, etc. It's surprising what you accumulate over time isn't it? When I first moved into this home, I had ample storage space, with lots to spare once settled. Now? Huh. Cupboards are full, things stored under the bed, and a shed full of ...you get the picture. 

It feels good to start a clearing out process. Well...for me anyway. I'm not a hoarder and downsizing is easy for me. My husband? I wouldn't call him a hoarder but he definitely puts a value on something that may have a future use. My motto is if you aren't using it now...get rid of it. He knows I'm ruthless and also knows since we are planning to live in a 37.5 foot fifth wheel for a while, it all goes. No high monthly storage rates in our future. So he's leaving it to me and trusting my instincts. Of course there are things we would  keep, like sentimental family items, pictures, childhood items, and so on. But with ample storage under the fifth wheel, we should be able to store all we are keeping. Keep in mind, we do not intend on travelling with the fifth wheel. The cost would be too much. We are moving to Vancouver Island to be closer to family and will find a park on the ocean to settle down at. If at any time, we decide to move into a regular home or apartment, it will be fun to shop for new furniture.

Moving on (pun intended), there's my writing life. My sequel, Chasing Georgia, Book 2 in the Georgia Series is complete, edited, with rewrites and edits finished. Decision time is near. Should I self-publish or seek a publisher? My current publisher, who is near and dear to my heart, has moved to e-book publishing only. I'm not sure that's the direction I wish to move to. I have a lot of readers who prefer paperbacks. I'm working on all of my options and will keep you up-to-date when I decide. As to what is next? When I wrote the first book, Winter's Captive, my vision did not include a sequel. I envisioned it as a one up. At the end of writing the manuscript, a sequel gelled in my mind. Now completed, we have, Chasing Georgia. Is there a Book 3? My mind is working overtime on that, another decision to be made.

My writer friends are working  on their books and I anticipate great things for them all this year. These ladies have been a part of my writing life since I first started. We critiqued and supported each other through our journey to publishing. I consider them friends.

 Today, our arctic front broke and the temperature rose to 5c...Yay! Dennis and I drove to Leighwood Lake and hiked Kelly Lake Road under a big blue sky, bright sun, birds singing, snow melting, and dry, bare roads. It was so warm, I took off my winter jacket. When we returned, we sat in our fifth wheel and had coffee, deciding where things would be placed on board our future home.

Perhaps my anticipation was precipitated by the promise of spring.

A CHANGE OF SEASON

I love the fall. Looking out my office window with coffee in hand, the various shades of leaves from green to yellow, orange, and red set against the surrounding dark green mountains is breathtaking. The warmth and coziness inside my cocoon masks the cool air outside. Today will be a beautiful sunny, day.

What a great way to start this day. The quietness and tranquility totally inspire my creative spirit and is much needed after a stressful week, albeit positive stress, but non-the-less a crazy, full-impact experience.

After fifteen months on the market, we accepted an offer on our home. We are pleased that the couple that want our place are suited to it. Life is so strange and co-incidental. They are both an artist and a writer, just like my husband and myself. Very down-to-earth, they will settle into life in this beautiful little valley with ease. And like us when we first moved here, they have family here. We won't be leaving anytime too soon as the deal is subject to them selling their house, which probably won't happen when the snow starts to fly.

Unbelievably, another party wants our place as well. So much so, that they are waiting to make sure our deal goes through. He, also, is well suited here.

On top of this, we are agents for my sister's house which is rented out at the moment. We showed her house three times last week.

What's our future plan? To downsize, relocate to Vancouver Island where most of our family are, and live in a 33' Silverback Fifth Wheel by the ocean or on the river. Minimal housework, no yard work, and lots of time to write all those books bumping into each other inside my head.

I am also Chair of a committee putting on a fundraiser and talent show on November 8th to raise money for Variety - the Children's Charity in Vancouver. We are holding it at our Memorial Hall here in Clinton as a way for residents to give back for services they have been provided with over the years when their kids on occasion were ill and stayed in Children's Hospital in Vancouver. We are in the throes of rehearsals, gathering donations for a silent and live auction, and handling advertising. Truly an enjoyment, but a worry that all will go according to plan. The students are rehearsing for performances and we are working with them as well. I love to see the kids enthusiasm. Opportunities for them to explore their creative side is limited in our little village.

Meanwhile, I had a breakthough with my sequel and am busy plotting and creating. I expect to finish before Christmas.

We just celebrated Thanksgiving here in Canada and I feel truly grateful to be in a safe and happy space in my life. I wish the same to all of you.

THE ZEN OF IT ALL

SO...27 days into my retirement from the traditional working world and it still hasn't hit home.

The past four weeks have been filled with a week away on vacation, a week with the grandkids visiting, visits from great nieces, sisters, brother-in-laws, and surprisingly a slew of people interested in seeing our home (which is up for sale). Surprising because the market has been quiet here in our sleepy village. With so much happening all at once, it feels like an extended holiday. Summer is such a wonderful time to see family, enjoy swimming, and BBQ's. Last Sunday was our wedding anniversary and we went to Seton Lake for a last swim of the year and a picnic dinner in nature. Saw a hawk hunting, had to pull over for a cattle drive to bring the cattle to winter pasture, and deer. See pics below:

I still wake up at the same time my alarm clock used to go off at.  I don't have to set it anymore (bonus). I expect as we move into fall the realization "that the working outside the home part of my life is done" will sink in.

What I have noticed is that my list of things to do is getting done and there are more hours in the day. If not, there's always tomorrow.  I have more time with my husband and my cats. And...the opporunity to say "Hey, let's go do this" at the drop of a hat...and we have. I see myself adopting a "zen" way of life. Don't stress, don't rush, and above all meditate for mental and physical health.

I haven't had much time to do a lot of writing what with visitors and cleaning up for perspective buyers . But I have done some research for my sequel and some editing. A definite plus and a good start. Even spent some time thinking on my next project...new story, new characters, but still a woman heroine. Love those empowerment plots.

Once immersed into a writing frenzy...which I'm about to jump into head first...expect my sequel to be finished finally. At that point, decisions will have to be made as to how I wish to continue my writing course of action. But more on that later.

As I write this, my retirement from the working world IS beginning to sink in...AND I LIKE IT.
